The Sun Champs: Live from the Parking Pad
The Sun Champs are a Pittsburgh-based funk rock band who formed in late 2017, and celebrated the release of their first full-length album “Equator” in August 2023 and additionally released a self-titled debut EP in June 2019. The band incorporates dirty blues-rock riffs, jazzy keyboards, guitar and saxophone mastery, funky bass, and latin/funk drumming to create a unique sound, somewhere between Ray Charles, Carlos Santana, and the Grateful Dead.
Since 2019, The Sun Champs have graced the stages of Millvale Music Festival, Deutschtown Music Festival, Dormont’s Hollywood Theater, Thunderbird Cafe and Music Hall, Midsummer Music Festival, Farmjammalamma, Garefest, and most recently Jergel’s Rhythm Grille in support of Melvin Seals & JGB.
On August 25, 2023, The band’s first full-length independent release “Equator” was performed live at Pittsburgh’s Thunderbird Cafe and Music Hall and released on all streaming platforms. Equator is the band’s exploratory journey that winds seamlessly through acoustic rock, funk, jam, latin, and progressive rock. Leading up to the release, the band published two singles, “Feel It” and “Forget.” Shortly after its release, “Feel It” was featured on Spotify’s “Modern Jam Band” playlist, garnering national and international airplay.
